The surname Slater was first found in Derbyshire when the earliest records of the family were found in Barlborough Village. It derives from an occupational

name , that being the trade of a roofer.

Listed on the 1599 Subsidy Tax  being of householders are Christopher Slater , the Rodes , Barker and Wood families.
