BARLBOROUGH

An ancient village, steeped in history, perched on the top of a yellow limestone scarp in the furthest North East corner of Derbyshire. To the East, the flat lands of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire drop down to the river Trent and on to the sea. To the West, the hilly rocks of the coal measures and on to the foothills and the high tops of the Pennines.

This was a very strategic position above the valley - controlling the right to pass. The Romans camped here, the Normans camped here, even the Elizabethans camped here in our own Hall, at Bolsover Castle and at Hardwick further south along the scarp; all still prominent from the modern-day M1.

First, just a farming community living its own quaint, insular, life. Then the revolution that was coal mining - 21 registered sites in and around the village, not counting ancient bell pits.

The Centre aims to record and preserve the history, heritage and memories of this ancient village. The Centre is in the Old School House set in the grounds of Barlborough Primary School, opposite the main village green.

We welcome enquires, we welcome visitors and most of all we welcome your support of our aim to preserve its life and times for further generations to explore.
